ADDITIONAL INFO:                  The 163 rope or hawser pattern appears in the Schrade catalogs from 1953 until 1975. It is designed for cutting the rope and larger rope often used on ships. The Wonda Edge never appears in the catalogs in association with this knife. The Wonda edge was used on some hunting knives starting in about 1958 and last appearing on any pattern in 1963. It was a very short lived experiment in cutting edges, but I believe it is important because it was an early attempt at all serrated edge knife. The mixed large and small serrations we see these days on knives are incredibly effective for cutting the rope, especially when it is wet. However given the uniform small size the serrations I would think it was limited in its effectiveness, but was an important early experiment in the production of serrated knives even if it was short-lived. This knife has the Schrade Walden tang stamp so was made between 1958 in June of 1973 when the Walden name was dropped from the tang stamp. This was apparently an advertising knife because stamped in the wood is “THE CORDAGE GROUP.” Perhaps the Wonda Edge was made primarily as an SFO For the Cordage Group but I have heard of examples without the name on the handle. A unique addition for any collection.
