This is a Vintage or Antique NEW YORK KNIFE CO WALDEN “HAMMER BRAND” Model No. 3038R 3-Blade Equal End Lobster Shadow Pen Folding Pocket Knife with a Carbon Steel Long Spear Point Main Blade with a Long Nail Pull, a Carbon Steel Pen Secondary Blade with a Common Nail Pull,  a Carbon Steel Dual-Sided Fingernail File, or Manicure, Tertiary Blade that Opens From the Bottom of the Frame, an Excellent Set of Brown Jigged Bovine Scales, Two (2) German Silver Handle Pins in Each Scale on One End and the Original Bolster Still Riveted to the Scales and Frame on the Other End, German Silver Liners with the Top Liners having Some Nice File Work, Internal Springs, 2 3/4” in Length, Made by the New York Knife Co. Located in Walden, New York Between c.1882-1931. 

This is the only NYKC I’ve seen with the letter R after the knife number other than their razor knife which makes sense. I don’t know what this R stands for. Anyway, this is a really nice vintage New York Knife Co “ Hammer Brand” 3-blade equal end shadow lobster pen.  The knife has a carbon steel long spear point main blade with a long nail pull. Both blade faces have scratches from use and some very light micro-pitting.  Stamped on the front tang is HAMMER (over) BRAND along with the Hammer Brand arm and hammer logo. Stamped on the rear tang is the model number of 3038R. On the opposite end of the frame is a carbon steel pen secondary blade with a common nail pull. Both faces have scratches from use and quite a bit of staining. Stamped horizontally on the front tang is NEW YORK (over) KNIFE CO (over) WALDEN N.Y.  Opening from the bottom of the frame is a long carbon steel manicure blade. It has a standard vertical ridge and valley file on the blade face that folds face down into the frame. The top portion of the blade is the fingernail cleaner. The spear blade has a light “thump” on open and a very good snap on close. The pen blade has a good snap on both open and close. The manicure blade has a light “thump” on open and good snap on close. The knife has a nice set of jigged bovine scales. They’re in perfect condition with no cracks, splits or missing chips. There’s a brightly polished German Silver bar shield on the front scale. There are two (2) German Silver handle/pivot pins on one end. On the other end it has the original bail riveted to the scales and frame. in each scale. The liners are brightly polished German Silver and the top liners have some nice file wok. This very nice NYKC Hammer Brand Model No. 3038R Equal End Shadow Lobster Pen Pocket Knife was made at their factory in Walden, New York between c.1882-1931 and is 2 3/4” in length.  Additional photos or information on request.
