This is an Antique (if made between c.1882-1918) or Vintage (if made between 1919-1931) HAMMER BRAND 4-Blade Equal End Senator Shadow Pen Folding Pocket Knife with an Unused and Unsharpened Carbon Steel Spear Point Main Blade with a Long Nail Pull, Two (2) Unused and Unsharpened Carbon Steel Pen Blades with Long Nail Pulls, a Carbon Steel Dual-Sided Nail File or Manicure Blade, a Beautiful Set of Very Fiery Genuine Mother-of-Pearl Scales in Perfect Condition with No Cracks, Splits or Missing Chips, Three (3) Polished Brass Handle Pins in Each Scale, Brightly Polished German Silver and Milled Top and Bottom Liners, Two (2) Brightly Polished Steel Back Springs with No Breaks or Cracks, 3 7/16” in Length.

Well this is my second conundrum knife. You should’ve noticed I didn’t call this a New York Knife Co. knife even though I’m very confident it is. New York Knife Co not Hammer Brand is stamped on any of the blade tangs. But still legible on the front face of the spear blade is HAMMER BRAND and it’s certainly not made by Imperial. It’s also not one of the Hammer Brand repros coming out off China. Those have a unique tang stamp. Plus this knife, even though unused, does show some signs of age. I believe this actually a Salesman’s Sample knife that was never sStamped in the factory though the blade was etched. I don’t know why they would do that and I’ve never seen another. But then I’ve owned quite a number of old unique knives that were one-offs or one of a kind. This pattern is identical to their Model No. 4117 with identical blade configuration and the same 4 easy opens though the 4117 came with common nail pulls and these all have no nail pulls. But I could only find the 4117 in just one of my four catalogs though it could easily have been a different pattern number in a different catalog. But it’s a beautiful 4-blade shadow pen folding pocket knife. It has an unused and unsharpened carbon steel spear point main blade with a long nail pull. It still has its original factory mirror polish and it’s original factory edge. There are no stampings on either tang though HAMMER BRAND is still legibly etched on the front face in the same font used by NYKC. Next to the spear blade is one of the two unused and unsharpened carbon steel pen blades with a long nail pull, it’s original factory mirror polish and it’s original factory edge. On the other end of the frame is the second of the two unused and unsharpened carbon steel pen blades with a long nail pull. It also has its orifinal factory mirror polish and it’s original factory edge. The final blade is a carbon steel file, or manicure, blade. It has a two-sided standard vertical ridge and valley nail file. The top portion of the blade is the fingernail cleaner. The front edge of the fingernail portion is sharpened. All four blades are tight in the frame and still have excellent open and close snap. The scales on this knife are a beautiful set of very fiery genuine Mother-of-Pearl and they’re in perfect condition with no cracks, splits, missing chips or slivers. Both scales have great color when you turn them in the light displaying the pinks, blues, greens and purples within the shell. There are three brightly polished brass handle pins in each scale. The liners are brightly polished German Silver and both the top and bottom liners are all milled. The knife has two brightly polished steel back springs. They’re both free of any breaks or cracks and both continue to perform the functions they were designed to perform. This great old HAMMER BRAND 4-blade shadow pen folding pocket knife is in near mint condition and I’m convinced this is an authentic NYKC. The knife is 3 7/16” in length.
