This is a ***VERY RARE*** Unused and Unsharpened Vintage, or Antique, NEW YORK KNIFE CO. WALDEN “HAMMER BRAND” Etched Aluminum 2-Blade Shadow Pen Folding Pocket Knife Made for The United Construction Co. of Albany, N.Y. and has an Unused and Unsharpened Carbon Steel Spear Point Main Blade with Most of its Original Factory Mirror Polish and the Original Factory Edge, an Unused and Unsharpened Carbon Steel Nail File or Manicure Secondary Blade with its Original Factory Mirror Polish and the Original Factory Edge on the Top Portion of the Blade, Brightly Polished Etched Aluminum Handles with a Flower Motif Around the Three Aluminum Handle Pins and the Customer’s Name and Info Etched Into Each Handle, a Single Brightly Polished Steel Back Spring with No Cracks or Breaks, 3 1/8” in Length, Made by the New York Knife Company that was Located in Walden, New York with this Particular Knife Made Between c.1882 and 1931.

New York Knife Company was the first to make these etched aluminum pocket knives starting with the E.H. Best & Co. I have been buying and selling these vintage NYKC etched aluminum knives for many years. They are getting harder and harder to find now in any condition. Schrade began making them after NYKC went bankrupt in 1931 and those are still fairly easy to find. But the NYKC examples are much harder to come across especially in this near mint condition. I’ve seen three different companies that NYKC made these knives for with the E.H. BEST & CO version being the most common. They also made some specialty versions to commemorate special occasions for individuals. But in all my years anyway I’ve never come across one like this made for the United Construction Company. Plus this one has a different blade combination than the others. They came with a fat spear and a common pen blade. This one has a narrow spear main and a file blade secondary. Plus it’s unused, Unsharpened and in near mint condition. I’m sure there are probably others out there but I’ve never come across one some it’s apparent they don’t come available very often. This is a great looking example of an Antique or Vintage New York Knife Co. etched Aluminum Equal End Shadow Pen Pocket Knife made for the United Construction Co of Albany, New York. It appears to me to be unused and unsharpened and in near mint condition. It has a carbon steel narrow spear point main blade with a common nail pull. Both blade faces still have their original factory mirror polish and the blade still has its original factory edge. The front face does have two very minor spots of very light pitting but that’s it on either face. Stamped on the front tang is HAMMER (over) BRAND along with the arm & hammer logo. The knife has a carbon steel standard vertical ridge and valley nail file on each side and it has a long nail pull. The top 35% of the blade is a fingernail cleaner but it also has a sharpened front edge. Stamped on the front tang is NEW YORK (over) KNIFE CO. (over) WALDEN. Both blades still have very good to excellent snap on open and close. The etched Aluminum handles on this knife also serve as the blade liners. Both of the aluminum handles are in great condition and polished up very well. There is an etched flower design around each of the aluminum handle pins which also serve as each flower’s pistil. The three aluminum handle pins in each scale blend in almost invisibly into the handles themselves. Etched deeply on the front handle is COMPLIMENTS OF (over) THE UNITED CONSTRUCTION CO. On the rear handle it’s deeply etched ALBANY, N.Y. The knife has a single mirror polished steel back spring with no breaks or cracks. It continues to perform the functions it was designed to perform. This very rare New York Knife Co. etched aluminum pen knife is hard to find in any condition let alone one in this unused near mint condition. A company with a name as common as the United Construction Company is difficult at best to research. I did find a company of that name located in Albany that in 1906 that built bridges and bridge substructures a New England historic site and I believe this is the company the knife was made for. This great looking vintage hard to find NYKC etched aluminum knife is in near mint condition and is 3 1/8” in length. As I will most likely never find a like example the price will reflect that fact.
