H. Best & Co. of Boston and has a Just Barely Used and Sharpened Carbon Steel Spear Point Main Blade with Most of its Original Factory Mirror Polish and Original Factory Edge, Along with the Original Blade Etch of E.H. New York Knife Company was the first to make these etched aluminum pocket knives for E.H. Best & Co. Although NYKC began the use of the full Hammer Brand logo in 1882 E.H. Best & Co., then located in Boston, didn’t start in business until 1888. Thus we can date this knife as being made between 1888 and 1931, the final year NYKC was in business. This is a great looking example of an Antique or Vintage New York Knife Co. etched Aluminum Equal End Shadow Pen Folding Pocket Knife Made for E.H. BEST & CO. Who was then located in Boston, Massachusetts. The ones made by NYKC are more rare and come around much less often than the ones made much later by Schrade Walden. There even more rare as I buy nearly every one I see. Some examples of these NYKC made knives have a more dimpled surface but some, like this one, have a much smoother surface. These etched aluminum handles polished up as brightly. It has a carbon steel spear point main blade with a common nail pull. It still has most, if not all, of its original factory mirror polish and I’m pretty certain it still has its original factory edge. The front face has some very scattered staining, a very few minor micro-pits and one spider leg running through the “CO”. And though its faded some you can still easily see E.H. BEST & Co. etched on the front face in an elaborate period correct font. You may have to turn it in the light for it to jump out but it’s easy to see. The rear face has just a couple of light stains on the face and a few on the tang. It has some very light scratches from some very light use. Stamped on the front tang is HAMMER (over) BRAND along with the arm & hammer logo. The knife has a carbon steel pen secondary blade with a common nail pull. It still has its original factory mirror polish and its original factory edge. The front face has quite a bit of very very light pitting the length of the blade. The rear face is clean with just a few light scratches from use and a few horizontal ones from cleaning. Stamped on the front tang is NEW YORK (over) KNIFE CO. (over) WALDEN. The spear blade has excellent open and close snap and a hard half-stop. The pen blade is quiet on both open and close but if you flick it closed pretty fast it’ll snap for you. The etched Aluminum handles on this knife also serve as the blade liners. Both of the aluminum handles are in great condition and polished up great. There is an etched flower design around each of the aluminum handle pins which also serve as each flower’s pistil. The three handle pins in each scale blend in almost invisibly into the handles themselves. Etched deeply on the front handle is E.H. BEST & CO. on one end and BOSTON, MASS. on the other end. On the rear handle it’s deeply etched WOOLENS on one end and FELTS on the other end. The knife has a single brightly polished steel back spring with no breaks or cracks. It continues to perform the functions it was designed to perform. This New York Knife Co. etched aluminum pen knife is hard to find in any condition let alone one that polishes up this well and this good of a visible blade etching. This knife was made between 1888, the yearE.H. Best & Co. began in business, and 1931 which was the year NYKC went bankrupt and out of business. This great looking vintage hard to find NYKC etched aluminum knife is in excellent condition and is 3 3/8” in length. Additional photos or information on request.
