ADDITIONAL INFO:   I love Western knives because of the awesome carbon steel they have in them however I don’t have room enough to collect them so when I find one I pass it along hoping that one of our members who collects them or uses them will pick them up.

I traded for this knife at a show and it was a classic deal of trying to do through many things at one time. If I had looked at the knife a little bit closer I probably wouldn’t have traded for it, however the blade is full length and it will make someone an excellent hunting knife, because of the great Western carbon steel blade.

The 1937 reprint of the Western catalog in Harvey Platts book, “The Knife Makers Who Went West” list the G46 with a nickel silver guard and a long deep blood groove (or fuller) in the blade. It shows it was made in 4 ¼”, 5” and 6” blades with the overall length of the knife being 9 inches. This knife is 9 inches OAL and the blade is actually a little over 4 ¼”, so apparently the length of this blade is not been damaged by the heavy cleaning prior to my trading for this knife. This knife does not have the nickel silver guard, but it still does have the patent number listed on the tang stamp. I suspect this knife was made sometime from the late 1930s but prior to 1942 when war shortages of brass cause Western to replace the brass with aluminum and a short time later with steel. I didn’t spend time buffing or cleaning or sharpening this knife because someone is already over cleaned it, so it does need sharpening. I will be happy to do that free of charge if the new owner request that I sharpen it when they purchase it. I don’t think this is a fantastic looking knife that someone will build their collection around, but I do think it will give someone a lifetime of outstanding service. Priced to sell.
