This is a Vintage NEW YORK KNIFE CO. WALDEN Model No. 142 1-Blade Hawkbill Pruner Folding Pocket Knife with a Single Used And Sharpened Carbon Steel Pruner Blade with a Common Nail Pull, Redwood Scales with No Cracks, Splits or Missing Chips and Drilled for a Lanyard, Four (4) Steel Handle Pins in Each Scale, Rounded Single Flute Steel Bolsters and Steel Blade Liners, a Single Heavy Duty Steel Back Spring with No Cracks or Breaks, Made by the New York Knife Co. of Walden, New York Between c.1882-1931.

This Vintage New York Knife Co. Model No. 142 Hawkbill Pruner has a single used and sharpened carbon steel Pruner blade with a common nail pull. The front face has scratches from use and sharpening but is otherwise pretty clean. The rear face has the same scratches from use and sharpening and has some scattered micro-pitting and a small cluster of more pronounced  light pitting about 5/8” below the top of the blade tip. Stamped on the front tang is HAMMER (over) BRAND and the Hammer Brand arm & hammer logo. Stamped on the rear tang is their model number of 142. The blade has excellent, very hard and loud, alligator snap on both open and close and very hard half-stop. The knife has a set of redwood scales, that are now black, but still in very good condition with no cracks, splits or missing chips. Just some typical pocket carry type light scratches. The handles have been drilled for a lanyard if one chooses to use one. These scales will long outlive us all. Redwoods can grow to over 350’ tall and live 1,200-1,800 years and are resistant to insects and disease and most likely outlast all the steel parts on the knife. There are three (3) steel handle pins in each scale. The knife has steel rounded single flute bolsters. The blade liners are steel as well. The knife has a single heavy duty steel back spring with some scattered light pitting. But it’s free of any cracks or breaks and it continues to perform the functions it was designed to perform. This nice old vintage or antique NYKC Hawkbill Pruner is 4” in length. Additional photos or information on request.
