This is a Very Nice Used and Sharpened **RARE** NEW YORK KNIFE CO “HAMMER BRAND” Model No. 187 1-Blade Swell Center Coke Bottle Back Lock Folding Hunting Knife with a 4 1/4” Long Used and Sharpened Saber Clip Blade with a Long Nail Pull and with a Back Lock Mechanism That Locks the Blade in Place When Fully Open, a Gorgeous Set of Jigged Medium Brown Bone Stag Scales with a Single Tight Pin Crack on the Bottom Pin on the Rear Scale but No Other Cracks, Splits, Missing Chips or Missing Slivers, Two Shallow Easy Opens on the Bottom of Each Scale for Easier Access to the Blade Release Mechanism, a 1 9/16” Long Brightly Polished German Silver Fancy Gimp Style Shield on the Front Scale, Five Brass Handle Pins in the Front Scale and Six in the Rear Scale, Brightly Polished German Silver Single Flute Elongated Bolsters, Brightly Polished German Silver Flat and Rounded End Caps Drilled for a Lanyard or Clip and Each Stamped with NYK, Brightly Polished Brass Liners, a Single Brightly Polished Heavy Duty Steel Back Spring with No Cracks or Breaks and the Back Lock Mechanism and Blade Release, 5 1/2” in Length with the Blade Closed and 9 9/16” Long From Caps to Blade Tip When the Blade is Fully Opened, Made by the New York Knife Company that was Located in Walden, New York and Probably the Finest and Highest Quality Knife Makers Ever and Made in Their First Line of “Hammer Brand” Knives.

This beauty has a lightly used and sharpened 4 1/4” long carbon steel saber clip blade with a long nail pull. It appears it was cleaned at some point. Both faces are pretty clean and polished up well. There are a few blade rubs on the front face. Stamped on the front tang is NEW YORK (over) KNIFE CO (over) WALDEN. There is no stamping on the rear tang. The blade has a decent snap on open and it locks solidly in place with the back lock. The blade moves smoothly and easily and has a good snap on close. The Knife has a great set of medium to dark brown jigged bone stag scales. There is a single very tight crack on the bottom center pin on the rear it turns from the pin over to the back lock release. You are going to be hard pressed to even spot it without a bright light and a magnifying glass. I have included a photo This must have been a common occurrence on these old NYKC hunters as I’ve seen the same crack on 4 out of the 6 I have or have had. Other than this one there are no other cracks, splits, missing chips or missing slivers. There is a large 1 9/16” long brightly polished German Silver fancy gimp style shield on the front scale. There are 5 brass handle pins in the front scale and 6 in the rear scale. The knife has brightly polished German Silver bolsters with a single wide flute next to the scales. It has brightly polished German Silver rounded and flat end caps stamped with NYK on each cap. Plus there’s a factory drilled hole in the end caps for a lanyard or clip. It has brightly polished brass blade liners. There’s a single steel back spring with some light scattered staining but more importantly with no cracks or breaks. It continues to perform the functions it was designed to perform. The back lock locks the blade tightly in the open position and releases with just the right amount of force. This fantastic **RARE** hard to find in this or any condition NYKC Model No. 187 Swell Center Coke Bottle Lock Back Folding Hunting Knife was made in the New York Knife Company factory that was located in Walden, New York and made between c.1856-1931. I dated it back to possibly as early as 1856 because it has no Hammer Brand stamp which they first started to stamp on their blades in 1878. In 1882 the added the words Hammer Brand. This does not mean it was made prior to 1878 it just means I can’t date it later for the lack of the Hammer Brand stamp. Th3 knife is 5 1/2” in length closed and 9 9/16” long with the blade fully open. Additional information or photos upon request.
