About the only thing this knife doesn’t have is the Boy Scout blade etch on the main blade.  Other than that this is an excellent plus barely touched New York Knife Co Model No. BS1 “Official” Boy Scouts of America pocket knife. NYKC was the first maker authorized by the BSA to make them a Scout knife. They made many variations with most of the earlier ones being 2 blade models with the exception of the 4 blade Model No. 1004 with the BE PREPARED banner shield starting in 1911. This knife, made by the New York Knife Co. was their Model No. BS1 though the BSA number was 1566. The knife has a single cutting blade and 3 other tool blades with 5 tools. The knife has a barely touched and likely unsharpened carbon steel clip point main blade with a common nail pull.  All the blades look as though they’ve been lightly cleaned. The rear face of the clip blade has some very very light and hard to see micro-pitting. Other than that it’s in excellent shape. Stamped on the front tang is HAMMER (over) BRAND along with the Hammer Brand arm and hammer logo. The next blade, on the same pivot end as the clip blade, is a carbon steel screwdriver combo blade. This blade has a flat blade screwdriver on the tip of the blade and a wire scraper below that on both edges. Other than a couple of specks this blade is clean. Stamped on the bottom of this blade is NEW YORK (over) KNIFE CO (over) WALDEN. On the opposite end of the frame is the other carbon steel combo blade which consists of a can opener and a crown cap bottle opener. The front face has just a few light scattered stains but the can opener/cap lifter is in perfect mechanical condition. On this same pivot end is a Fuller spiral leather punch. Sometimes referred to as an awl but on the patent it’s identified as a leather punch.  This style of punch was patented in 1916 by I.E. Fuller of the New York Knife Co.  Stamped on the bottom of the front side of the punch is PTD (over) 1171422.  The back side of the punch has just a little bit of scattered very light staining.  The clip and screwdriver combo blade have very hard snap on open and close. The other combo blade and the punch have excellent hard and loud snap on open and close and very hard half-stops. The knife has an excellent plus set of brown jigged bone stag scales. They’re in perfect condition with no cracks, splits or missing chips. There is an easy open on the top of the front scale for easier access to the screwdriver combo blade nail pull. There is also a notch on the front scale to allow the tab on the can opener to seat flush in the frame when the blade is closed.  There is a brightly polished German Silver tipped oval shield on the front scale and stamped within it is the Fleur deLis Scout Emblem and under it is BE PREPARED inside a banner.  There are two (2) brass end pins in each scale and a larger German Silver center pin on each side. The knife has brightly polished German Silver single fluted (or lined) rounded bolsters. The original removable German Silver or steel shackle is still attached to the bolsters. The knife has brightly polished brass liners with a heavy duty bottom center liner. There are two heavy duty polished steel back springs and both are free of any cracks or breaks. Both springs continue to perform the functions they were designed to perform. This hard to find, in this good of condition, or any condition, Vintage New York Knife Co Model No BS1 “Official” Boy Scouts of America pocket knife was made in the NYKC factory located in Walden, New York, with this model made between c.1926-1931.
