This knife, made by the New York Knife Co.,was one of three versions that I’m familiar with. There’s the most common BB1 and the smaller less common BB4. This version of  the Buffalo Bill Scout is the rarest of the three as I’ve only seen two others. The BB1 and BB4 knives both have a clip point main blade while this one has an apparently unused and unsharpened carbon steel spear point main blade with a long matchstriker nail pull. The blade maintains most all of its original factory mirror polish and its original factory edge. Stamped on the front tang is HAMMER (over) BRAND along with the Hammer Brand arm and hammer logo. The next blade, on the same pivot end as the spear blade, is the carbon steel screwdriver combo blade. It has a flat blade screwdriver on the tip of the blade and a cap lifter, or bottle opener, below that. Other than a few scattered specks this blade is clean. Stamped on the bottom of this blade is NEW YORK (over) KNIFE CO (over) WALDEN. On the opposite end of the frame is an unused carbon steel can opener blade. Both faces are as clean as new.  Next to it is a carbon steel leather punch which is full length and still has the tip intact. It has quite a bit of staining on the back side of the blade. Stamped on the bottom rear blade face is WALLKILL RIVER (in an arch)(over) WORKS (over) WALDEN. Wallkill River Works was just another trademark NYKC used and those knives were made in the same Walden factory as the NYKC knives were made. All four blades have excellent hard open and close snap. All the blades, with the exception of the combo blade, have hard half-stops  The combo blade has no half-stop. The knife has an excellent plus set of medium to very dark brown jigged bone stag scales. They’re in perfect condition with no cracks, splits or missing chips. The rear scale is lighter than the near black rear scale indicating it may have been stored in a display case for an extended time. There is a notch on top of the front scale to allow the tab on the can opener to seat flush in the frame. There is a brightly polished German Silver oval shield on the front scale and stamped within it is a depiction of Buffalo Bill Cody. The two (2) end pins on each scale are brass and the larger center pins on each scale are German Silver. The knife has brightly polished German Silver single flute and rounded bolsters. They are all free of any dents or dings and have only some light scratches.  This variation of the Buffalo Bill Scout knives did not come with a bail or shackle. The knife has brightly polished brass liners with a heavy duty bottom center liner. There are two heavy duty steel back springs and both are free of any cracks or breaks. Both springs continue to perform the functions they were designed to perform. This hard to find and rare vintage New York Knife Co. Buffalo Bill Scout Knife was made in the NYKC factory located in Walden, New York and is 3 5/8” in length. Additional information or photos upon request.
