ADDITIONAL INFO:      This is a Hammer Brand knife made by New York Knife Company. New York Knife Company went out of business during the Great Depression in 1931. Imperial Knife Company then acquired the Hammer Brand name and logo and used it for there shall handled knives. This knife is an original Hammer Brand made by New York Knife Company prior to their close in 1931. The style of knife is called a timber scribe or race knife, they were used to carve letters or numbers to identify the ownership of certain logs or lumber. I have also heard of them being used for marking wooden barrels. This knife has been used and sharpened; it has great patina!

This knife has a place both in the history of cutlery and in the history of technology and industry. Born of the necessity to apply identifying marks to logs, lumber and other wooden objects this was the “permanent marker” of its day. A piece of technological and cutlery history.
