Handmade Raven Bowie Knife - Gorgeous Hand Carved Stag Handle - Opal Eyes!
The Raven has always been considered a noteworthy bird. From Nordic folklore to the works of Edgar Allen Poe, the Raven has served as a symbol of mystery and intelligence throughout history. Even in recent years, scientists continue to discover just how smart these birds really are. With all of the fascination and curiosity surrounding these clever creatures, it's no surprise that this craftsman dedicated such a beautiful piece to these amazing animals. As a homemade knife, this piece contains no markings to indicate who made it, or when. It is truly one of a kind!
The handle is made out of finely carved stag antler, a traditional and durable material for knife construction. The hefty, clip point blade with standard brass cross guard makes this knife easily identifiable as an American Bowie Knife pattern. (See more info on the history of the Bowie knife on my previous listing) Opals were chosen to be inlaid for the eyes of the raven, giving it a powerful and magical appearance. It reminds me of the ancient practice of placing runes in special tools or heirlooms for special powers, good luck or divine protection. Anyone who has ever played an RPG can appreciate the symbolism of this. Opals are believed to contain both physical and metaphysical properties. They represent everything from knowledge and truth to faith and loyalty. Which is fitting, considering that Odin's Ravens Huginn (meaning "thought") and Muninn (meaning "memory") would fly around the world each day and report back everything they saw each night.
This is probably the most unique and interesting knife that I have acquired since I began collecting. I often find myself debating on whether or not I should keep it. Each day I seem to appreciate it more and more. This relatively new style of knife, born from the American legends of the "New World" pairs flawlessly with the "Old World" traditions of using animal imagery and gemstones for their positive energies. Whether or not you believe in these practices, does not change the fact that this knife has craftsmanship and beauty worthy of admiration.
This knife measures in at 13.75" overall with an 8" fixed blade. It is all very solid with no wobble. I'm guessing that the eyes are covering up pins for the handle, which would indicate that the tang runs about 3/4 of the way down. The base of the thick spine has some file work. There is a small chip near the tip of the blade. Does not come with a sheath.

**Note: I am new to knife collecting and selling. All descriptions are to the best of my knowledge and in an attempt to be as honest and forthright as possible in regards to knife condition.
