DAMAGE:   Normal wear, minor pitting, (see pics).

 ADDITIONAL INFO:     John Goins’ “Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings,” dates the Anton Wingen, Othello factory is having begun in “1875 to present.” It is important to note that that book was published in 1998 and has not been updated to my knowledge since 1998. Many of the companies listed by Goins as being in business in 1998 have since ceased operations, notable among those Schrade (Imperial Schrade Corporation) and Camillus Cutlery.

Bernard Levine in "Levine's to Knives and Their Values," 4th edition, list the ending date of the Othello factory as 1996. I think Mr. Levine is probably correct. My point is that when researching old companies with information written in old books and sometimes best to seek a second or third source to confirm information like their ending date.

Wingen made a lot of contract knives for American companies and the Othello logo tang stamp was generally on the back tang. This knife appears not to be a contract knife but made to bear the house brand on the front tang and the Othello stamp on the rear tank. This style knife was quite popular right after World War Two and they have remained popular to this day. The stag on this knife is exceptional in my opinion.
