This is a Vintage ELECTRIC CUTLERY CO 1-Blade Hawkbill Pruner Folding Pocket Knife with a Single Used And Sharpened Carbon Steel Pruner Blade they Still has Visible Blade Etch of “ELECTRIC PRUNER” on the Front Face, Redwood Scales with No Cracks, Splits or Missing Chips, 4 German Silver Handle Pins in Each Scale, Brightly Polished Extended and Rounded Brass Bolsters, German Silver Liners, a Single Heavy Duty Steel Back Spring with No Cracks or Breaks, Made by the Electric Cutlery Co. of Newark, New Jersey Between c.1889-1909. 

I believe this is an Electric Cutlery Co Hawkbill Pruner made in Newark, New Jersey mainly because it isn’t stamped either Newark or Walden. It’s post Friedmann & Lauterjung because it has the Cutlery Co stamp which wasn’t used until they formed as a separate company c.1889.  I believe it’s pre NYKC by not being stamped Walden and because of the arched Electric stamp on one side. This Vintage Electric Hawkbill Pruner has a single used and sharpened carbon steel Pruner blade. Both faces have scratches from use and sharpening but other than that only a few micro-pits mainly on the front face. Still visible in good light at the right angle on the front face is the original etching of ELECTRIC PRUNER. It took me a minute to figure out the pruner part because only the NER was visible in the right light. Stamped on the front tang is ELECTRIC (in an arch).  Stamped on the rear tang is ELECTRIC (over) CUTLERY Co. The blade has a hard and loud alligator snap on both open and close and a very hard half-stop.  The knife has brightly polished brass extended and rounded bolsters. The knife has a set of, what I believe, are redwood scales, that are now black, but still in good condition with no cracks, splits or missing chips. In fact I don’t ever recall seeing a set of redwood scales that had a crack.  It’s possible they could be Cocobolo but the grain doesn’t seem right.  There are 4 German Silver handle pins in each scale.  The blade liners are German Silver as well and nice and straight. The knife has a single heavy duty steel back spring.  It’s free of any cracks or breaks and it continues to perform the functions it was designed to perform. This nice old hard to find vintage and antique Electric Cutlery Co. Hawkbill Pruner is 4 5/8” in length. Additional photos or information on request.
