This is a Vintage Antique Lightly Used AMERICAN SHEAR & KNIFE CO 3-Blade Splitback Whittler Pen Folding Pocket Knife with a Lightly Used and Possibly Unsharpened Carbon Steel Narrow Spear Point Main Blade with a Long Nail Pull and the Blade Etch is Still Visible, a Lightly used and Unsharpened Carbon Steel Pen Secondary Blade with a Common Nail Pull, a Carbon Steel Dual-Sided Nail File, or Manicure, Tertiary Blade, a Beautiful Set of Translucent Genuine Mother-of-Pearl Scales In Perfect Condition with No Cracks, Splits or Missing Chips, Three Brightly Polished Brass Handle Pins in Each Scale, Brightly Polished Nickel Silver Tip Bolsters, Brightly Polished Brass Liners, Two Polished Steel Back Springs in a Splitback Configuration with No Cracks or Breaks, 3 1/4” in Length, Made by the American Knife & Shear Company that was Located in Hotchkissville, Connecticut with this Beautiful Knife Being Made Between c.1870-1914.

This is a very nice antique American Shear & Knife Split Back Spring Whittler Pen Pocket Knife in excellent condition. It has a carbon steel spear point main blade with a long nail pull with etching still visible on the front face. The front face is pretty clean except for a minor amount of scratches from use. There are actually more horizontal scratches where it looks like someone tried to erase the blade etching. I don’t know what they were trying to accomplish. Still very visibly etched on the front face is TREADWAY (over) HAND HAMMERED. The rear face has some scratches from use and just a few light stains and blade scuffs. Stamped on the front tang is AMERICAN (in an arch)(over) SHEAR (over) & KNIFE CO. On the other end is a carbon steel pen secondary blade with a common nail pull. The front face has a cluster of light pitting near the tang and there’s some more scattered light pitting from past the end of the nail pull to near the blade tip. The rear face has some scratches from use but is otherwise clean. Stamped on the front tang is AMERICAN (in an arch)(over) SHEAR (over) & KNIFE CO. Next to it is a carbon steel dual-sided nail file, or manicure, tertiary blade. It has a standard vertical ridge and valley type fingernail file on each face with the top end being the fingernail cleaner. The front edge of the fingernail cleaner is sharpened. All three blades look as though they were lightly cleaned at some point. All three blades have excellent hard snap on open, close and the half-stops. The pen blade and file blade both have a bit of side to side wobble when open but not bad. The spear blade is solid with no wobble or play. This knife has a great set of translucent Genuine Mother-of-Pearl Scales. They’re in perfect condition with no cracks, splits or missing chips. The patterns in the pearl appear to move when turned in the light. There are three brightly polished nickel handle pins in each scale. The knife has very brightly polished nickel silver tip bolsters. The top and bottom liners are brightly polished brass. The knife has two mirror polished steel back springs in a split back spring configuration. This allows the pen and and file blade to each ride on their own back spring while the wider spear blade rides on both back springs. Both springs are free of any cracks or breaks and both continue to perform the functions they were designed to perform. This gorgeous antique Splitback Whittler Pen Folding Pocket Knife is 106-140 years old. Made by American Shear & Knife of Hotchkissville, Connecticut between c.1870-1914.
