This is a Vintage Salesman’s Sample W.D. HERBERT 2-Blade Shadow Pen Folding Pocket Knife Made in Solingen, Germany at the Heinrich Boker Baumwerks as a Contract Knife for W.D. Herder and Came Off a Salesman’s Sample Board Taken by Felix Angst, Former President of Boker, When He Left the Company and Has an Unused and Unsharpened Carbon Steel Spear Point Main Blade with a Common Nail Pull, and Still has its Original Factory Mirror Polish and Original Factory Edge, an Unused and Unsharpened Carbon Steel Pen Secondary Blade with a Common Nail Pull, its Original Factory Mirror Polish and its Original Factory Edge, a Set of Green and Black Imitation Water Buffalo Horns in Perfect Condition with No Cracks, Splits or Missing Chips, Nickel Silver Liners, a Single Polished Steel Back Spring with No Cracks or Breaks, 3 1/4” in Length, Made by the Heinrich Boker Knife Works in Solingen, Germany for W.D. Herbert As a Contract Knife Sometime in the 1940’s. 

Very little is known about H.D. Herbert and so far I’ve only seen his name listed in Goins but with no further information. What I do know is this was a contract knife made at the  Boker factory in Solingen, Germany sometime in the 1940’s. It was on a salesman’s sample board in the Boker factory and was taken by Ernst Felix, a former president of Boker, when he left the company. This salesman’s sample knife came off one of those boards. This Rare example has an unused and unsharpened carbon steel spear point main blade with a common nail pull. Both blade faces still retain their original factory mirror polish and original factory edge. Stamped on the front tang is W.D. (over) HERBERT. The secondary blade is an unused and unsharpened carbon steel pen blade with a common nail pull. It also maintains its original factory mirror polish and its original factory edge and both faces remain unblemished. Stamped on the front tang is DRGM which stands for Deutches Reichsgebrauchsmusters. This was a way for German manufacturers to protect their product without actually having a patent. It was used between c.1891-1952.  Both blades still have excellent hard open and close snap. The knife has a nice set of green and black imitation water Buffalo horn scales. They’re in great shape with no cracks, splits or missing chips. The knife has a single polished steel back spring and its free of any cracks or breaks. Both springs continue to perform the functions they were designed to perform. This rare beautiful vintage Boker made Equal End Shadow Pen folding pocket knife is in near mint to mint condition.
