This is a Vintage Antique HSB & Co, HIBBARD SPENCER BARTLETT & CO, 3-Blade Serpentine Shadow Lobster Pen Folding Pocket Knife with a Carbon Steel Long Spear Point Main Blade with a Common Nail Pull, a Carbon Steel Pen Secondary Blade with a Common Nail Pull, a Carbon Steel Dual-Sided Fingernail File Tertiary Blade that Opens From the Bottom of the Frame, a Beautiful Set of Fiery Genuine Mother-of-Pearl Scales In Perfect Condition with No Cracks, Splits or Missing Chips, Five (5) Brightly Polished German Silver Handle/Pivot Pins in Each Scale, Brightly Polished German Silver Liners With File Work on Both the Top and Bottom Liners, 3” in Length, Made by Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Co that was Located in Chicago, Illinois and Made Between c.1855-1960.

This is an earlier Vintage Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Co 3-Blade Serpentine Shadow Lobster Pen Folding Pocket Knife  At first I though it was a four blade lobster with one blade missing but it is, and always has been, a 3-blade knife. I found a nearly identical knife in an old HSB catalog. It came in stag and Pearl but only showed the stag version which had tip bolsters and shield where this knife has neither. I still believe this is their model No. 742 as everything else matches the 741 stag version. Length is right, pattern is right, blade type and combination are correct as is the pin placement. Opening from the top of the frame is a used and sharpened carbon steel long spear point main blade with a common nail pull. Both faces have scratches from use and sharpening and both have some light scattered staining.  Stamped on the front tang is HIBBARD (over) SPENCER (over) BARTLETT. I can’t see below that. On the other end of the frame and opening from the top is a used and Charlene’s carbon steel pen secondary blade with a common nail pull. Both faces have scratches from use and sharpening and scattered stains and very light scattered pitting.  Stamped vertically on the front tang is HIBBARD (over) SPENCER (over) BARTLETT (over) & CO. OPENING from the bottom of the frame is a carbon steel fingernail file, or manicure, tertiary blade. It has a standard vertical ridge and valley type file on each face while the top portion of the blade is the fingernail cleaner. The front edge of the fingernail cleaner portion of the blade is sharpened so be careful. Stamped vertically on the front tang is HIBBARD (over) SPENCER (over) BARTLETT (over) & CO.  All three blades still have excellent open and close snap. This knife has a fiery set of Genuine Mother-of-Pearl Scales.  They’re in excellent condition with no cracks, splits or missing chips. Plus both scales exhibit the beautiful blues, greens, purples and pinks one wants to see on an exceptional slice of Pearl as they are turned in the light. There are five (5) brightly polished German Silver handle/pivot pins in each scale. There is a shallow easy open on the top of the front scale allowing easier access to the spear blade nail pull. There’s also a single shallow easy open on the bottom of the front scale that allows easier access to the nail pull on the manicure blade. The top and bottom liners are brightly polished German Silver with both the top and bottom liners having been file worked. This vintage HIBBARD SPENCER BARTLETT & Co 3-blade Serpentine Shadow Lobster Pen Folding Pocket Knife Lobster Pen Folding Pocket Knife is 3” in length and made between c.1855-1960.  Additional photos or information on request.
