This is a really nice old Cattaraugus Model No. 32649 3-blade Swell Center Balloon Whittler Pocket Knife. The two (2) clip point blades look seemingly unused and unsharpened but there are some signs the coping blade may have bee lightly used. But they have been cleaned and now have that satin brushed stainless steel look though they are carbon steel. It has a clip point main blade with a common nail pull. Both blade faces are clean as a whistle now with no signs of any scratches, pits or staining. Stamped on the front tang is CATTARAUGUS (in an arch)(over) CUTLERY Co. (over) LITTLE VALLEY (over) N.Y. stamped on the rear tang is the model no. of 32659. On the other pivot end is a carbon steel short clip point secondary blade with a common nail pull. Both faces do have scattered light pitting but no scratches or stains. And it has that satin brushed stainless steel finish. On the same end of the frame is a carbon steel coping blade with a common nail pull. Both faces do have some scattered light pitting and some signs of use and possible sharpening. Now has the same finish as the other two blades. All three blades have excellent open and close snap and no wobble or play. The scales on this knife are an excellent plus set of dark brown jigged bovine bone. At first I thought they were crack free. But with better light and a magnifying glass I found two very tight related cracks on the rear scale. One runs from the end pin over to the bolster. Another crack starts at the same point on the bolster as the pin crack but instead runs due right and under the pin by quite a bit out to about 5/8” beyond the the bolster. Again, they are very tight and hard to see on these dark bone scales and have no effect on the integrity of the scale. There are no other cracks or missing chips on the scales. There is a brightly polished nickel silver pointed oval shield on the front scale. There are three (3) nickel silver handle pins in each scale. The liners are brightly polished brass. The knife has two steel back springs. They’re both free of any breaks or cracks and both continue to perform the functions they were designed to perform. The two minor blades each ride on their own spring while the thicker clip blade rides evenly on both springs. This great old hard to find Cattaraugus Model No. 32659 Swell Center Balloon Whittler Pocket Knife is 3 1/2” in length. Additional photos or information on request.
