ADDITIONAL INFO:     Gerber made to sharpening steels, the 5” any 8”. The 5” was made from the early 1960s through 1993. The longer 8” model was only made from 1971 through 1989. They are functional as a sharpening steel and with one hand ground into a wedge chisel shape, they are quite useful to break the pelvis of an animal when skinning a larger animal in the field. This 8” one comes with the leather sheath which can actually be worn on the belt or carried in a pack or pocket.

The back of the sheath is stamped GERBER / PORTLAND, ORE. / 97223 / SPORTSMEN’S STEEL. The 5” Sportsmen’s Steel are by far the most common. This is the first 8” that I have seen other than pictures. A must-have for your Gerber collection and a good piece of gear to use in the field!
