This is an Excellent Vintage John Salm DeLuxe 2-Blade Sleeveboard Shadow Pen Watch Fob Folding Pocket Knife with a Carbon Steel Long Spear Point Main Blade with a Long Nail Pull, a Carbon Steel Pen Secondary Blade with a Common Nail Pull, a Fantastic Set of Genuine Fiery Abalone Scales that Maker John Salm is Known For,  a Single Nickel Silver Handle Pin in Each Scale as Well as the Two Rivets Attaching the Bail to the Scales, Brightly Polished Brass Liners, the Original Steel Bail Still Riveted to the Scales, a Single Polished Steel Back Spring, 2 ¼” in Length, Made by John Salm that was Located in Torrance, California and in Business From c.1918-1935 Though this Knife was Made Earlier Between c.1918-1925. 

John Salm, located in Torrance, California, almost exclusively made small lobster pen and watch fob knives to be attached to pocket watches and I guess later on for key chains. Almost all his knives had abalone scales with just a few made with pearl scales. From 1918-1925 his knives were stamped DeLuxe and from 1926-1935 he changed the stamping to SALM. This is one of his DeLuxe Knives made between c.1918-1925. They aren’t really a rare knife but they’re pretty uncommon now and especially in this good of condition. This knife has a carbon steel long spear point main blade with a long nail pull. Lightly used and sharpened but still mains most of its original factory mirror polish. The front face has about 4 small specks on it and the rear face is pretty much clean. The blade polished up really well. Stamped clearly on the front tang is DeLuxe (in script). On the other end of the frame is a carbon steel pen secondary blade with a common nail pull. Both faces just have some very light scattered staining and embedded micro-pitting.  But it as well maintains much of its original factory mirror polish and bother are still close to full. Both blades still have very good to excellent open and close snap. The scales are the best part of a John Salm Watch fob Knife and these are some of the best I’ve ever seen. These are in perfect condition with no cracks, splits or missing chips. The front scale has a boy 75% coverage of the best and most fiery part of the abalone shell. The rear scale is nearly as beautiful with about 35%-40% coverage of the heart of the abalone shell. Abalone shells exhibit much more vivid color than the best Pearl scales do.  This much color and overall coverage is some of the best I’ve ever come across on a John Salm knife.  The original brass bail is still riveted to the narrow end of the scales. The knife has a single nickel silver handle pin on the wider end of the scales and then the bail is riveted into the scales and frame just like a normal handle pin on the narrow end. It has a single  steel back spring. It’s free of any cracks or breaks and continues to perform the functions it was designed to perform. This is an excellent plus example of a vintage or antique early John Salm DeLuxe Sleeveboard Shadow Pen or watch fob knife and is 2 ¼” in length. Additional photos or information on request.
