ADDITIONAL INFO:   This knife is one I made from a leftover blank from the Western factory in Boulder Colorado. This blade appears to have been made in 1989 just a couple of years before Camillus purchased Western in 1991. The handle of this knife is moose antler that I got in Alaska a couple years ago while visiting my granddaughter. Sorry, no great hunting tales of the big moose that I shot, I bought the moose antler on the Kenai Peninsula from an antler broker. They have all kinds of interesting handle material in Alaska! I left the snap on the keeper strap long so that it could be easily opened while wearing gloves. I can shorten it, if you would prefer.

The sheath is one that I made to fit the knife. It is made from 9 ounce vegetable tan leather. The original Western sheaths that were made years ago were typically about half this thick, being made from about 5 ounce leather and not vegetable tanned so that they could cause verdigris. Verdigris is the green deposit on copper and brass caused by acid leaching copper out of the brass or copper rivets. This can happen to the rivets in the sheath, if they are brass, as opposed to brass plated, but it can also happen to brass fitments on the knife itself.

This knife was made from a blank that was produced and ground at the Western factory in Boulder Colorado. My contribution was finishing the knife, fitting some moose antler to the handle and making the leather sheath. One observation about moose antler; I understand why it is not extremely common on knife handles. The thickness varies greatly, and this was one of the most difficult pieces of antler I have ever fit to a knife. I hope it finds a welcome place in someone’s collection.
