The design of my leather pocket knife strop called StropBaton™ is rounded to offer a consistent, low-weight surface that avoids damaging your pocket knife edges during quick, high-angle (20°) contact. The round profile of my StropBaton™ ensures the contact point is the same during use regardless of the angle the baton is held, making it easy for you to maintain a consistent angle without requiring a flat surface to perfectly align a strop. My pocket knife strop offers steady control which is helpful for a more detailed stropping process for the smaller edges typically found on pocket knives. 

The design inspiration for StropBaton™ was observing how a knife honing rod (sharpening steel) is used to preserve the integrity and sharpness of a blade edge and helps in realigning the edge of the blade and removing any small burrs that may have formed during use. I started using a flexible barber-style strop on my leather working tools but couldn't find the consistency, extra degree of sharpness, quick return to a high performance level and extended time between full sharpening that I was looking for. This is what led to the development of StropBaton™ whose trademark registration is pending.

I experimented with using an adhesive to secure the leather to the baton which would have made assembly more efficient but found it difficult to properly align and to stay secured after field trials and rigorous use. Instead, I use five stitches/inch (55 total) that are hand-stitched on every StropBaton™ using Ritza 25 Tiger Thread, imported from Germany, which is known for its strength and durability due to finely-braided 100% polyester fibers. Because of the exposed stitches, caution should be used when using StropBaton™ to ensure that your blade edge does not come into contact with the stitches which might cut them (although I haven't experienced that to date).

I use American made six ounce leather from Hermann Oak Leather Company that is vegetable tanned in a way that has not changed much in hundreds of years. The benefit is strong, firm and relatively low stretch leather and the result is a hand made and long lasting sharpening tool that you might be able to hand down to the next generation. The StropBaton™ is approximately 16.0" long with an 11.0" x 4.375" x 3/32" thick (2.39 mm) undyed leather stropping surface covering the 1.75" diameter baton. A handy cord lanyard helps with storage and to secure the StropBaton™ firmly in your hand while being used. The assembly of each StropBaton™ takes slightly more than one hour to complete so they are being offered on a very limited basis.
