This is an Excellent Vintage SALM 1-Blade Shadow Jack Watch Fob Folding Pocket Knife with a Lightly Used or Sharpened Carbon Steel Clip Point Blade with a Common Nail Pull, a Nice Set of Genuine Abalone Scales that Maker John Salm is Known For with No Cracks, Splits or Missing Chips, Stamped on the Front Scale with Ohio Caverns, a Steel Permanently Mounted Vail on the Open End, Two (2) Nickel Silver Handle Pins in Each Scale, Brightly Polished Brass Liners, a Single Steel Back Spring, 1 3/8” in Length, Made by John Salm that was Located in Torrance, California and in Business From 1918-1935 Though this Knife was Made Between 1926-1935. 

Of all the Salm abalone watch fob knives I’ve had over the years this one has got to be one of the smallest at just 1 3/8” in length. John Salm, located in Torrance, California, almost exclusively made small lobster pen and watch fob knives to be attached to pocket watches and I guess later on for key chains. Almost all his knives had abalone scales with just a few made with pearl scales. From 1918-1925 his knives were stamped DeLuxe and from 1926-1935 he changed the stamping to Salm. This is one of his Salm Knives made between 1926-1935. They aren’t really a rare knife but they’re pretty uncommon now and especially in this good of condition. People often wrongly identify them or can’t read the stamp at all but I can almost immediately tell one on first sight. This little watch fob knife has a barely used and unsharpened carbon steel clip point main blade with a common nail pull. Both faces look to have more marks from cleaning the blade than it does from any use. Stamped on the front tang is Salm. The blade has a light “thump” on open and close and a nice half-stop. The scales are abalone as are pretty much all the knives John Salm made. These are in good shape with no cracks, splits or missing chips. The front scale has a lot of fire, or colors, in it when you turn it in the light. This one was obviously a souvenir knife as the front scale is stamped with Ohio Caverns. There are two (2) nickel silver handle pins in each scale. It has a permanently attached bail on the open end. The liners are brightly polished brass. It has a single steel back spring that’s free of any cracks or breaks and continues to perform the functions it was designed to perform. This is an excellent plus example of a vintage John Salm 1-Blade Jack Watch Fob Knife made in Torrance, California between c. 1926-1935. The small little knife is only 1 3/8” in length.
