This is definitely a project knife but it’s also a hard to find maker. Some of these knives were actually made by Napanoch. This is a hard to find vintage, or antique depending on the year it was made, Kelly-How-Thomson Co 4-Blade Sleeveboard Lobster Pen Pocket Knife with two (2) cutting blades and two (2) tools. This knife has a used and sharpened carbon steel narrow spear point main blade with a long nail pull that’s a little bit short.  Actually it’s broken off and has lost at least half its original link. What’s left is kind of stained and with some light micro-pitting. It has scratches from use and a few light pits on both the front and rear faces. Stamped on the front tang is HICKORY with a diamond pattern stamped over it. Stamped on the rear tang is the model number of 74208.  On the same pivot end is a carbon steel pair of still working scissors. It still has its original spring on it.  Opening on the opposite end of the frame is a used and sharpened carbon steel pen secondary blade. It does have some scattered light but overall it’s still close to full.  Stamped on the front tang is KELLY-HOW (over) THOMSON. Opening from the bottom of the frame is a wide carbon steel nail file, or manicure, blade. It has a standard vertical ridge and valley type nail file on the bottom face of the blade that folds face down into the frame. One side of the blade is a flat surface and on the other side is the file. The top 3/8” or so of the blade is the fingernail cleaner. All four of the blades/tools have a very good snap on both open and close with the exception being the scissor are pretty quiet on close.  The knife has a set of genuine Mother-of-Pearl scales. There is There is a chip out on the rear scale above the top end pin on the wide end. There’s also another tiny chip on the very top end of the smaller end of the rear scale. There is a shallow easy open on the top of the front scale for easier access to the nail pull on the main blade. There’s another shallow easy open of the rear scale for easier access to the scissors. There are four (4) brass handle/pivot pins in each scale. The knife has brass liners on both the top and bottom. The springs are internal and are still working as designed. This old Kelly-How-Thomson Co 4-Blade Sleeveboard Lobster Pen Pocket Knife is a project knife for sure but it would be a shame to just part it out. If you collect hard to find makers you’ll want to add this one to your collection. The knife is 2 11/16” in length and made in Duluth, Minnesota between c.1896-1947. Additional photos or information on request.
