Vintage WILSON HAWKSWORTH & ELLISON/AMERICAN KNIFE Brass Jack Hybrid Pocket Knife c.1846-1911
I’ve come to an easy conclusion that this knife is a hybrid though it’s still very old. It’s my belief the blades are obviously Wilson Hawksworth & Ellison. They were located in Sheffield, England between c.1846-1850's so the blades are definitely as old as they look. But I would seriously doubt they’d attach the blades to a frame that was stamped AMERICAN KNIFE. So what we have here is a twofer. Parts from two different makers.
So………this little knifezilla has a very used and sharpened carbon steel spear point main blade with a common nail pull. Besides the obvious scratches from use and a whole lot of sharpening both faces have quite a few scattered clusters of light pitting and staining. Stamped on the front tang is WILSON (over) HAWKSWORTH (over) ELLISON. It also has a used and sharpened pen secondary blade with a common nail pull. Both faces have quite a bit of moderate pitting. Stamped on the front tang is WILSON (over) HAWKSWORTH (over) ELLISON. Surprisingly both blades have excellent open and close snap and hard half-stops. These blades are pretty old as they were made between c.1846 and the 1850's and they look as though they’ve been around at least that long. Now it’s possible I may be wrong and they decided to build a knife to export to the former colonies and thus dubbed it the AMERICAN KNIFE. Maybe this knife is correct and a rare one. However……..I’m sort of leaning that the brightly polished brass scales were made by the American Knife Co between c.1849-1911. Judging from the wear on the brass they’re likely from that era. The brightly polished embossed brass scales have a crosshatch and horizontal lines pattern. In the center of each scale there's a long oval area and within that it reads AMERICAN KNIFE. There are three (3) brass handle pins in each scale. There’s quite a bit of wear on the words AMERICAN KNIFE on both scales. The brass scales serve as the liners as well. The knife has two steel, I think they’re steel, back springs. Both are blackened I suppose from oxidation after 167-175 years of laying around. They’re free of any cracks or breaks and they continue to perform the functions they were designed to perform. Well at least the blades are extremely rare. This rare hybrid knifezilla of an antique knife is 3 1/4” in length. Additional information or photos upon request. The photos are easy but I doubt I can provide much more information.
