This is a Vintage, Actually Antique, One Tiny Tight Crack From Being Mint FRIEDMANN & LAUTERJUNG CELEBRATED CUTLERY 3-Blade Balloon Pen Splitback Whittler Folding Pocket Knife with an Unused and Unsharpened Carbon Steel Spear Point Main Blade with its Original Factory Mirror Polish and its Original Factory Edge, an Unused and Unsharpened Carbon Steel Pen Secondary Blade, an Unused Carbon Steel Dual-Sided Nail File, or Manicure, Blade, Saber Clip Point Main Blade, a Great Set of Genuine Mother-of-Pearl Scales with a Sort Tight Pin Crack on the Center Pin of the Front Scale and the Only Thing Keeping Me From Calling This Knife Mint, a Brightly Polished Nickel Silver Long and Narrow Bar Shield Inlaid Flush in the Front Scale, Three Brass Handle Pins in Each Scale, Brightly Polished Nickel Silver Elongated and Rounded Bolsters, Brightly Polished Brass Liners, Two Steel Back Springs in a Split Back Spring Configuration and with No Cracks or Breaks, 3 3/8” in Length and Made by Friedmann & Lauterjung Celebrated Cutlery of New York and Germany and Made Between c.1866-1909. This is a beautiful Friedmann & Lauterjung Celebrated Cutlery 3-blade splitback balloon Whittler pick knife that is a tiny pin crack from being mint and I’ll still call it near mint. This beauty of a knife has an unused and unsharpened carbon steel spear point main blade with a common nail pull. The blade still has its original factory mirror polish and its original factory edge just like it came out of the factory. The front tang is stamped FRIEDMANN & (over) LAUTERJUNG (over) CELEBRATED (over) CUTLERY. On the other end of the frame is an unused and unsharpened carbon steel pen secondary blade with a long nail pull. It too still has its original factory mirror polish and its original factory edge. The front tang is stamped FRIEDMANN & (over) LAUTERJUNG (over) CELEBRATED (over) CUTLERY. The third blade is an unused carbon steel dual-sided nail file blade with a long nail pull. The blade has a standard vertical ridge and valley style nail file on each face. The top portion of the blade is the fingernail cleaner. Stamped on the rear tang is FRIEDMANN & (over) LAUTERJUNG (over) CELEBRATED (over) CUTLERY. All three blades have excellent open and close snap and the pen and file blades have hard half-stops. The knife has a fiery set of genuine Mother-of-Pearl scales with the blues, pinks, greens and purples showing when they’re turned in the light. The only issue with this knife is a very tight short pin crack on the center pin of the front scale. This is the one and only reason I don’t call this knife mint. The knife has a brightly polished long and narrow bar shield inlaid flush in the center of the front scale. There are three brass handle pins in each scale. It has brightly polished nickel silver elongated and rounded bolsters. The knife has brightly polished brass liners. The two steel back springs are in a split back spring configuration which allows the thicker spear main blade to ride evenly on both springs while the pen and nail file blades beach ride on their own back spring. The back springs are in great condition with no cracks or breaks and both continue to perform the functions they were designed to perform. This is an extremely nice Near Mint Antique Friedmann & Lauterjung Celebrated Cutlery Balloon Pen Splitback Whittler made between c.1866-1909. Finding an example in this condition at 110-158 years old is a very rare find. The knife is 3 3/8” in length. Additional photos or information on request.
