I’m going to forego the usual detailed description and let the photos do most of the work. Which I hate by the way. Pictures aren’t part of the description but they are part of the presentation. This is either a rare vintage JACKSON KNIFE & SHEAR FREMONT, O or a hard to find WM ELLIOTT NEW YORK Crown Cigar Jack Folding Pocket Knife. Actually it’s not 100% of either. What it is is an old vintage Knife-en-Stein. I imagine one of the earliest owners of this nice knife broke or otherwise damaged a blade. Too expensive and wasteful to throw away a good knife they most likely found a blade compatible and replace it themselves. So now it has two primary blades and just coincidentally ended up with blades from two hard to find knife makers. The front blade is a well used, sharpened and short carbon steel clip point blade with a long nail pull. It’s lousy with scratches and even some grinding marks. Stamped on the front tang is JACKSON (over) FREMONT, O. This was the stamp used by the Jackson Knife & Shear Co of Fremont, Ohio and in business between c.1899-1914. The back blade is in the same used, heavily sharpened and short carbon steel spear point blade with a very long nail pull. It was tough to determine the stamping on this one but blowing up several photos it finally showed itself as WM ELLIOTT (over) & CO but I can’t read the final line. They were in business between c.1880-1918. Both blades are tight in the frame but have no discernible snap. The spear has to be pushed to close and sits so low in the well you can’t access the nail pull at all. Now the frame itself is really nice. It’s 3 5/8” long with some really nice rounded and horizontally fluted nickel silver bolsters. There’s no doubt the pin on the pivot end has been removed and replaced. The scales are also kind of unique as they match the shape of the bolsters and end caps with the same horizontal center groove. I really can’t tell f the scales are one or stag. They do have a little chipping of the other layer in a few spots. I believe the three handle pins in each scale are brass but they’re hard to see. Liners are brass. Two steel back springs are free of any cracks or breaks but blade movement still sucks. This old knife certainly has a lot of character even if we don’t know for sure who made it. 3 5/8” in length. Additional photos or information on request.
