This is a vintage or antique EMPIRE WINSTED CT 3-Blade Splitback Whittler Folding Pocket Knife with .925 Sterling Silver Scales. It has a lightly used and sharpened carbon steel spear point main blade with a long nail pull. Both faces have scratches from use and but otherwise pretty clean and polished up nicely. Stamped on the front tang is EMPIRE (over) KNIFE CO (over) WINSTED CT. On the other end of the knife is a used and sharpened carbon steel pen secondary blade with a common nail pull. Both faces have scratches from use and only some very scattered very light micro-pits. Stamped on the front tang is EMPIRE (over) WINSTED (over) CT. Next to the pen blade is a carbon steel dual-sided nail file, or manicure, tertiary blade. There is a standard vertical ridge and valley style nail file on each face. The top portion of the blade is the finger nail cleaner. All three (3) blades still have very good to excellent snap on open and close and the two smaller blades have excellent half-stops. The knife has a very brightly polished, decorative, etched and embossed .925 Sterling Silver scales. Etched in the center of the front scale in an old and decorative font looks to be the name G or J Coward. Stamped around the curved end of the front scale is STERLING to indicate the scales are made of .925 silver. There is a raised beaded edge all the way around on both scales. Both scales have quite a few dents and dings and I believe Mr or Mrs Coward didn’t get the message that this was a knife and not a hammer or an anvil. The knife has steel liners. There are two (2) steel back springs which are in a split back spring configuration. This allows the secondary and tertiary blades to each ride on their own back spring while the wider main blade rides on both of the back springs. Both back springs are free of any cracks or breaks and both back springs continue to perform the functions they were designed to perform. Despite the dents and dings this is still an Empire Knife, a Splitback Whittler and has .925 Sterling Silver Scales. This really nice Empire Knife Co. 3-blade Sleeveboard Splitback Whittler Folding Pocket Knife is 2 13/16” in length and was made between c.1856-1930 in their factory located in Winsted, Connecticut.
