2 Congress Whittlers N.C.Co. Novelty Cutlery Co Canton, Ohio Vintage Pin Up Art
2 Vintage Congress Whittlers made by the Novelty Cutlery Co of Canton, Ohio. The company was in business from 1879 to 1948. I believe these are from the early 1900's. The construction of the 2 knives is identical as shown in the pictures. Very good condition, well made, show light cleaning and polishing. Excellent blade snap.
The stamping Vignos is for the founder of the company Augustus Vignos. There is an excellent writeup about him and the company in the October 2002 newsletter of the Oregon Knife Collectors Club, written by the Great, great, granddaughter of Mr. Virgos. He was the first company to make knives with pictures under clear celluloid covers. Many were made for advertising purposes and special presentations. And some with Pin up pictures.
