Restored Western L48B

BRAND:   Western, Boulder Colo

MAKER:   Western, Boulder Colo

PATTERN:   L48B – Model number stamped on brass guard.

OAL:   7-1/4”

BLADE LENGTH:   3-1/2”

GUARD:  Brass

POMMEL:  Aluminum

HANDLE:   Original handle was leather, but the leather was dried out so I replaced it with sandbar stag handles.

SHEATH:   Handmade, handstitched leather sheath.

BLADE WEAR:   I have noticed some inconsistencies in the Western catalog reprints in Harvey Platt’s book, “The Knife Makers Who Went West.” The 1959 – 1960 catalog says this knife should have an overall length of 7-1/8” and this knife has an overall length of 7-1/4”. So by that measurement it’s 1/8 of an inch longer than it should be. But the overall length of the blade itself is 3-1/2” but according KMWW, page 164 it says the blade length on this knife should be 3-5/8”. I guess some people would say the blade has been broken off and tipped and another might feel it’s a little oversized.

AGE:   Made circa 1959-1960.

CUSTOMIZED IN: U.S.A. by Orvet (Dale Vincent)

ADDITIONAL INFO:    This knife appears in Made of heavier leather than the original sheaths were. I made this one myself! Harvey Platt’s book, “The Knife Makers Who Went West.” There was another knife produced that same year call the L48A. This knife was 8 inches overall and it featured a nice full fuller along the spine. The L48B was a Sabre ground knife with leather ring handles. The same exact knife was made with stag handles at the factory and was called 648B . Whether you’re interested adding this knife to your collection or using it daily, it will do you proud.
