ADDITIONAL INFO:      This pattern has been around for quite some time. In 1946 the catalog listed the #21 pattern as having “bone stag” handles. I have one in my collection with the “bone stag” handles and it is Rogers bone. The 1948 Camillus catalog lists the handles as “Stagged” this was probably synonymous with “bone stag” but it also could have been used as a name for some of the early plastics used for handles by many companies in the cutlery industry. We know they were experimenting with composite “stag” replacements probably before the war was over. They did this for the simple reason there was a shortage of material during the war.

By 1965 the catalog is listed the #21 as having “Brownstag®” handles. In 1972 the Camillus catalog listed the handles for the #21 as “Cabone.” By 1982 Camillus had change the handle material, or at least the name of it once again and now the #21 had “Brown Delrin stag handles.” I have a strong suspicion that Brownstag®, Cabone and Brown Delrin stag are all one in the same. It is however possible that the term “Brownstag® may have been used on an earlier composite material and then applied to Delrin when they made the change to using Delrin on this pattern. So there you have the handle history of this little #21 peanut pattern that Camillus called a “Pony Jack.”

The Pony Jack may have been made prior to World War II but most catalogs from that era were not printed by Camillus but were printed by the companies that sold their knives come in most cases hardware stores or hardware suppliers. We know for sure that it was produced in 1946 and the last mention of the #21 “Pony Stag” was in the 1994 Camillus pricelist. It was somewhere around 1990 that Camillus introduced a new peanut pattern #710 called the “peanut knife.” In 1990 they introduced four variations of handle materials for the #710; yellow Delrin, black Delrin, brown Cabone and India stag, all of which were variations made from Delrin. By 1994 the single blade #710 and pretty well taken over the place of the #21 Pony Jack and Camillus’ lineup.
