ADDITIONAL INFO:      This is a restored West-Cut knife model number 645. It has a saber ground blade and originally had a black composite handle made to look like bone stag. Checking Harvey Platts book, “The Knife Makers Who Went West,” I do not find any mention of the West-Cut brand nor do I see any model number 645 in the catalog pages. However, in the 1936 catalog no. 50 the knife appears to be the same as the Western States model 245. The model 245 is also listed in the 1941 catalog. It appears this knife may have been made originally prior to World War II. I cleaned up the blade considerably from the grinder marks that were on it, but I couldn’t remove the mall without removing too much of the blade and too much of the history of the knife. I replaced the faux bone stag/composition handles with smooth camel bone with an Appaloosa type dye job. The rear handle looks a bit more like Appaloosa bone and the front handle, but that’s what happens when you’re working with natural material. The natural density of bone varies from piece to piece, which affects the way the bone absorbs the dye.

I also handmade the sheath, double stitched with the corners reinforced by rivets. It is a flat type sheath of the same style Western used on many of their knives. One thing I did differently was to cover the back of the handle strap snap with leather so that it would not scratch the bone handle and I left the strap a little longer than Western left theirs to make it easier for my arthritic fingers to grip the strap to open the snap.
