Aaron Ward started a mail order business, the original credit/satisfaction guaranteed format in Chicago in 1872. A long story short, the business lasted until 2001 and continues today in a different format. Naturally, a knife like this one has checks on both sides of the fancy file worked pearl, but it dates to the early 1880s! The long brass bolsters have been filed in two directions. Both blades are tight with 1/2 stops, full with tarnish but little or no use.. Both are tang stamped Ward Bros. So, German made before the tariff? I doubt it. Most likey made in one of the northern states.
