This is another fantastic example of the early Buck knives, which came from humble beginnings in sunny San Diego, California. The 500 series debuted in 1975, starting with the 501 Esquire (or Squire) The second knife added to the series was the 503 Prince, which made it’s debut in 1977. This is the earliest variation of the 503, sporting micarta scales (which were replaced with wood in 1980), and the highly desired Buck “script” tang stamp (which ended in 1984/85).

This knife is in very good condition. It’s drop point blade does not appear to show any signs of use or sharpening. It is made of 440 stainless steel and measures in at 2.5”. It locks open solid with no blade play or wobble. Good/decent snap on close. The micarta scales are free of any chips, cracks or major blemishes. There is a small nick on the pile side. The nickel silver bolsters have some light marks and blemishes acquired over the years. (see pics) No box.

The 503 is considered by many to be one of the most practical EDC knives ever made. It is small enough to slip into any pocket or purse, yet tough enough to withstand decades of use. The fact that this model has remained in production for nearly 50 years is a testament to it’s success and practicality. However, as with most things today, they just don’t make them like this anymore.
