Queen Cutlery #70 Country Cousin Amber Sod Buster - 1990

Made in America!

A Brief Queen Cutlery History

As with all American blade manufacturers, Queen Cutlery has had an extensive and complicated history. The short story is that a handful of Schatt and Morgan employees left S&M and began making knives on their own in Titusville, PA circa 1918. They were very successful and produced knives in their original factory for nearly 100 years, using traditional methods and equipment. During that time, they acquired numerous companies and trademarks, including Robeson and, their former employer, Schatt and Morgan in 1933. Queen was bought by Servotronics in 1969 and then sold to the Daniels Family in 2012. Daniels Family Cutlery kept things running until 2018, when Queen shut it's doors for good.

This familiar sod buster pattern is a Queen #70 "Country Cousin" (Queen also had a similar pattern called the "Plowboy", but I have not been able to note any differences between the 2). It is a simple, yet durable, single blade slip joint knife. It is in excellent condition, with only some discoloration on the tang and light scuffing on the blade. It can probably be cleaned up quite easily. The 3" Stainless Steel Drop Point blade maintains it's factory edge. Never used, carried or sharpened. The spring has great snap on open and close. There is zero wobble or play. The beautiful gold and red scales are free of any chips or cracks. It has brass pins and liners. 3 5/8" closed OAL. The tang stamp indicates that it was made between 1982-1990. However, according to Queen's historical records, the #70 pattern only featured black delrin scales until 1990, when red delrin and Amber (yellow) were introduced. However, these scales do not resemble any of the scales seen in the normal lineup. This leads me to believe that these scales are from a limited run/SFO or a custom rehandle job. Either way, the final product is beautiful. The knife has a nice wood pattern appearance that I just can't seem to find the words to describe. I have not been able to compare it to others out there, as searching for examples of these rare scales doesn't turn up much. I will be sad to see this one go.

Queen has always been held in high regard with collectors, noted for their high quality and tradition. Following the closure of their doors in 2018, there has been a renewed interest in collecting all lines of Queen Cutlery; including Robeson, and Schatt and Morgan. Grab your piece of American knife history before they're all gone!

**Note: I am new to knife collecting and selling. All descriptions are to the best of my knowledge and in an attempt to be as honest and forthright as possible in regards to knife condition. I have conducted hours upon hours of research on each individual knife that comes into my possession in an attempt to set a fair price. PLEASE feel free to contact me for more information on this or any other item in my store.
