Antique Saynor Hawkbill Knife - Sheffield, England
Made in Sheffield, England!
Samuel Saynor created the Saynor Cutlery brand as far back as 1738. After his passing, his son (Also named Samuel) took over the firm until he too died in 1839, leaving the firm to the third generation of knife maker, John Saynor. John later renamed it Samuel Saynor & Son by 1845. When John passed in 1849, his wife, Sarah, was left with the operation. Later, Sarah was remarried to William Cooke. The operation changed it's name to Saynor & Cooke, and they were soon specializing in horticultural tools such as budding/grafting knives and other types of cutlery. They were highly regarded for their high quality products. William Cooke died in 1872, and sometime after that, Sarah brought in another partner, John Ridal. By 1881, the firm, now named Saynor, Cooke & Ridal, was winning awards for their products all around the world.
This antique hawkbill is in such great shape, measuring in at just over 4" closed. While it is obvious that this knife has been used as intended, the blade still has plenty of life left. Most Saynors I've seen have been worn down to almost nothing. The 3" blade is made of high carbon steel, with only light, spotty patina and wear marks. The "Saynor Sheffield England" tang stamp is still crisp and clear. The "Saynor" blade stamp is nice and deep, clearly legible with only the bottom being worn. I'm not entirely sure what the scales are made out of. It looks like some sort of deep jigged bone, but has a dark and glossy finish and what appears to be some shrinkage? So I'm guessing it must be a type of synthetic material. Either way, the scales are free of any chips or cracks. It has beautiful deep grooved bolsters, with hammered brass pins and a very cool brass butt plate/pommel which you can actually use to stand the knife upright. The spring maintains great snap on open, close and half stop. No wobble or play. It feels incredibly solid given it's age. A great example of why Sheffield will always be known for their cutlery.
**Note: I am new to knife collecting and selling. All descriptions are to the best of my knowledge and in an attempt to be as honest and forthright as possible in regards to knife condition. I have conducted hours upon hours of research on each individual knife that comes into my possession in an attempt to set a fair price. PLEASE feel free to contact me for more information on this or any other item in my store.
