Made in America!

Here is a beautiful piece of American cutlery from a bygone era. Robeson came onto the scene in 1879 as an American importer of knives and razors from Europe. The Robeson name first started being stamped onto these imports around 1891. And in 1896, Robeson Cutlery began producing it's own knives here in the USA. They went on to produce knives for nearly 100 years, before being bought out by Ontario Knife Co in 1971; who was owned by Servotronics, along with Queen Cutlery. Robeson was merged with Queen, who reintroduced a limited run of Robeson series knives in the 1990's, before they themselves also went out of business, in 2018.

This knife was made very early on in Robesons century plus lifespan, with the tang stamp placing it's production between 1900-1916. It is a swell center jack knife pattern with what looks like a spear or sabre main blade sitting behind a pen blade secondary. The main blade has a swedge running about 1/3 of the way down the spine on both the mark and pile side. The secondary blade has an interesting swedge on the pile side, running all the way down the length of the spine. Both blades have moderate to heavy wear, with the main blade having a slightly blunted tip. Due to wear, they both sit slightly low. However, you do not have to dig for the nicks. They are both visible and easily accesible. Given the age of the knife, the patina is remarkably light, with no chips or pitting. The springs are also in very good shape. Good snap on open and close for both blades. No wobble or play. The scales are beautifully worn bone. I'm assuming there once was a simple bar style shield pinned to the front scale, where now only the pin remains. It has a noticeable crack running through where that shield once sat, ending in a moderate chip under the center pin. The rear scale is perfect. No chips or cracks. Despite the cosmetic damage, there is no movement in the scales.
