Vintage Scandinavian Knife
Kauhava’s knife is the name for the traditional model lacquered knives with birch bark handles. The Vallesmanni is a longer-bladed version of the Kauhava knife. The name Vallesmanni is local dialect word meaning a chief of police.
This is an old knife made the tradition way in Finland. The blade is carbon steel and is 5 1/4" long and a little over 1/8" thick. Overall length is 10".
This early vintage example is a decorative version and has a brass horse head pommel.
The grip is made from multiple ring sections of birch bark that have been sanded smooth and finished in a clear lacquer.
The large ferrule is also made from brass
The polished steel blade has a single curved cutting edge, a fuller on both surfaces, a solid hidden tang and a flat spine.
The brass and steel will probably polish up nice and bright if that's what you choose to do.
