This knife has a lightly used and sharpened 4 3/8” long carbon steel saber clip blade with a long nail pull. The front face has scratches from use and other than that only a minor spot or two. The rear face has scratches from use and a little scattered light staining and few light micro-pits. At 4 3/8” long I believe this blade is at or very near it’s factory length. Stamped on the front tang is HAMMER (over) BRAND along with the Hammer Brand arm and hammer logo. Stamped on the rear tang is NEW YORK (over) KNIFE CO (over) WALDEN. The blade still has a good snap on open but it does drag some when closing though it will snap if you push it closed with a bit of extra oomph. The blade locks firmly in place when fully opened and has no play or wobble. Of course that more than obvious bolster pin has a hidden story that I’m not aware of or what it’s been through but whomever replaced it, or tried to, beat the hell out of it. The blocks firmly in place when fully open and has no wobble or play. The knife has an excellent set of medium brown jigged bone stag scales. There are no cracks, splits or missing chips. About half of the 187s I’ve had have had a tight crack from the center pin over to the back lock but not so on this one. She’s crack free. There are two shallow easy opens on the bottom of each scale for easier access to the blade release mechanism. There is a large 1 9/16” long brightly polished German Silver fancy gimp style shield on the front scale. There are five (5) brass handle pins in each scale. The knife has what looks like steel bolsters with a single wide flute next to the scales. If they are German Silver, and they should be, somebody in the past worker them over. It has brightly polished German Silver rounded and flat end caps stamped with NYK on each cap. The end caps have just a bit of wear on the NYK stamps. Plus there’s a factory drilled hole in the end caps for a lanyard or clip. It has brightly polished brass blade liners. There’s a two piece polished steel back spring with no cracks or breaks and the two meet where the back lock for the blade is located. The back lock locks the blade tightly in the open position and releases with just the right amount of force. This hard to find in this or any condition NYKC Model No. 187 Swell Center Coke Bottle Lock Back Folding Hunting Knife was made in the New York Knife Company factory that was located in Walden, New York between c.1882-1931 and is 5 1/2” in length closed and 9 1/2” long with the blade fully open. Its not the nicest 187 I’ve ever owned but the blade seems to be factory length. If whatever nimrod that beat on the bolsters for whatever reason had not done so then this wouldn’t be the first one I sold for under $400.00. Don’t be afraid to make an offer. All I can say is No at the worst and it’s near the holidays so im more likely to give. Maybe Additional information or photos upon request.
