This is a vintage antique Chipaway Cutlery Co 3-Blade Split Back Spring Whittler Pen Pocket Knife. It has a used and sharpened carbon steel spear point main blade with a common nail pull.  Both blade faces have scratches from use but are otherwise clean with a single speck on the front face. Stamped on the front tang is CHIPAWAY (in an arch) CUTLERY and then I can’t see underneath that. On the other end of the frame are two well used and well sharpened pen blades with common nail pulls. The pen blades seems to be the Toto blades through a majority of its years of use. They have both been sharpened down considerably but the front pen I longer than the rear one. Both blades have clean faces other than the scratches from use and sharpening.  Stamped on the rear tang of the front pen blade and the front tang of the rear pen blade is CHIPAWAY (in an arch)(over) CUTLERY (over) CO. All three blades have very good to excellent hard snap on open and close and the two two pen blades have hard solid half-stops. This knife has a set of Genuine Mother-of-Pearl covers with each having some good fire to them. It does have a single tight crack that runs from to to the bottom liner going through the shield. It’s the only negative about the covers. There are three (3) brass handle pins in each scale  There’s a nickel silver crest shaped shield inlaid flush in the front scale. The knife has brightly polished nickel silver tip bolsters. The top and bottom liners are brightly polished brass. The knife has two (2) steel back springs in a split back spring configuration. This allows both the pen blades to each ride on their own back spring while the wider spear blade rides on both back springs. Both springs are free of any cracks or breaks and both continue to perform the functions they were designed to perform. This vintage antique Chipaway Cutlery Co 3-Blade Splitback Whittler Pen Folding Pocket Knife is between 124-139 years old. Made by sale in the E.C. Simmons Hardware store located in St. Louis, Missouri. The knife is 3 1/8” in length. Additional photos or information on request.
