After World War II there were a lot of nice knives being exported from Germany to the US after World War II. (Many of them probably made from scrap German and American steel that was no doubt in abundant supply). I am told that several GIs went back and began to import knives from Germany as the cutlery industry began to emerge from the devastation of war. Knife making his old industry and can be quite simple. Some historians have said the knife industry in Germany was one of the first industries to reestablish itself after the war.
