CONDITION: Very good

DAMAGE:   Normal dings and wear to blades and bolsters. A ding in the liner about midway on the top, see picture 7 (letter g). It appears the stag and liners were ground down a bit too far before the springs was fitted. See the last picture 8, letter h.

BLADE WEAR:   Blades have been sharpened but appeared to be nearly full.

ADDITIONAL INFO:      Puma Knife Works was founded in Solingen Germany by the Lauterjung family in 1769. Puma knives were imported into the United States by Gutmann Cutlery Corporation starting about 1957. In 1991 Gutmann Corporation changed owners and the importation rights to Puma were given exclusively to Coast Cutlery Company of Portland Oregon.

I managed a cutlery store in not far from Portland Oregon in the 1980s. I was very familiar with both Gutmann and Coast Cutlery Company and business with both companies. Unfortunately after Coast became the importer of Puma the line was downgraded and puma closed their factory. Today Puma Knives are made under a license agreement by another company.

This knife looks to me like some of the older Puma Knives that I saw from the 1970s and 1980s, with very thick stag reminiscent of some of the Puma hunting knives. The blade etch on this knife appears to me to be like the etch used on the puma knives of the 1980s.
