In the 1980s, Case knives used a dating system where the number of dots below the "USA" stamp indicated the year, with one dot removed each year. So, 9 dots would signify the year 1981.

Here's how the dating system works for Case XX knives:

  • 1970s: 10 dots were present, and one dot was removed each year.

  • 1980s: The same system was used, but the "S" in "Case" and "USA" might have a different, more "lightning-like" shape, and the dots were placed above the "USA" instead of below.

  • 6392: This number indicates the pattern of the knife, which is a Stockman.

  • 9 dots: Indicates the year 1981.

So, a Case XX 6392 knife with 9 dots on the tang stamp would likely be a Stockman knife from 1981.
