ADDITIONAL INFO:      This is a WWII Engineer’s knife used by both the Navy and the U.S. Army. The Navy spec number was 41-J-4 and the army spec number was 17-170. The military name is “Knife, Pocket, Engineer, Four Blade, With Clevis.” Camillus made 1.7 million of these for the U.S, Navy and 3.2 million for the U.S. Army. -Information from Pocket Knives of the United States Military, by Michael Silvey.

This knife has the older style can opener made prior to 1944 when all the can openers were standardized with the “safety can opener.”

When I got this knife several years ago it had the lifting tab of the can opener broken off and someone had cut off the clevis and scared the left front bolster in the process. I finally found a donor knife that was an exact match to this knife, with a worn master blade & broken handles; but with a good clevis and a can opener that matched the type of can opener in this knife. I removed the broken can opener and replaced it with the good one and put the clevis on this knife to restore this knife and keep it historically correct with the proper parts from the same model knife made in the same era.

For the sake of full disclosure; this knife has been restored with original parts from the same model knife made in the Camillus factory prior to 1944.
