Queen Cutlery Rawhide Series - Drop Point Hunter #4180 1980's 1990's
Made in America!
A Brief Queen Cutlery History:
As with all American blade manufacturers, Queen Cutlery has had an extensive and complicated history. The short story is that a handful of Schatt and Morgan employees left S&M and began making knives on their own in Titusville, PA circa 1918. They were very successful and produced knives in their original factory for nearly 100 years, using traditional methods and equipment. During that time, they acquired numerous companies and trademarks, including Robeson and, their former employer, Schatt and Morgan in 1933. Queen was bought by Servotronics in 1969 and then sold to the Daniels Family in 2012. Daniels Family Cutlery kept things running until 2018, when Queen shut it's doors for good.
The Rawhide Series was first introduced in 1980, and this Drop Point Hunter was one of three fixed blade patterns to remain in the lineup throughout it's run, which ended in 2001. The #4180 model is a simple, durable design with the outdoorsman in mind. It is well balanced and the flared scales help it to sit comfortably in the hand. It features a 3 3/8" stainless steel, drop point blade, with an overall length of 8". The thick blade stock runs the lenth of the tang, finished with tough Staminawood scales and brass pins. It has nickel silver bolsters with the Crown Q stamp on the mark side. The Rawhide blade etch remains fully intact. Early models of this knife also included "440 Stainless" in it's etch, leading me to believe that this knife may have been produced sometime after 1993, when they began advertising their steel as "Queen Steel". There was another change around this time, when they began adding grooved or checkered handles to the Rawhide fixed blades. This indicates that this knife was made prior to 1995 (The earliest I could find this change in the handle design) which either narrows the production to a 3 year window (1993-1995); or 1980-1995, simply without the predominant "440 Stainless" blade etch. At a minimum, that would mean this knife is 1 month shy of it's 30th birthday; or possibly it's 45th! This knife is in excellent condition. The blade maintains it's factory edge, never being used carried or sharpened. There is a small ding on the pile side, near the spine (see pics) and some minor scuffs and scratches on the bolsters and scales, but free from any chips or cracks. Does not come with a sheath. Queen has always been held in high regard with collectors, noted for their high quality and tradition. Following the closure of their doors in 2018, there has been a renewed interest in collecting Queen Cutlery. Grab your piece of American knife history before they're all gone!
**Note: I am new to knife collecting and selling. All descriptions are to the best of my knowledge and in an attempt to be as honest and forthright as possible in regards to knife condition. I have conducted hours upon hours of research on each individual knife that comes into my possession in an attempt to set a fair price.
