Queen Cutlery - 1980 Rawhide Series Minuteman #8445 - 1987 Ducks Unlimited SFO #1175 Patriot - RARE
Made in America!
A Brief Queen Cutlery History:
As with all American blade manufacturers, Queen Cutlery has had an extensive and complicated history. The short story is that a handful of Schatt and Morgan employees left S&M and began making knives on their own in Titusville, PA circa 1918. They were very successful and produced knives in their original factory for nearly 100 years, using traditional methods and equipment. During that time, they acquired numerous companies and trademarks, including Robeson and, their former employer, Schatt and Morgan in 1933. Queen was bought by Servotronics in 1969 and then sold to the Daniels Family in 2012. Daniels Family Cutlery kept things running until 2018, when Queen shut it's doors for good.
Queen first introduced the model #8445 in 1980. Originally appearing as part of the Rawhide Series, The "Minute Man" was the smallest lockback knife Queen has ever produced. Despite the modest size, these humble knives remained on Queen's roster for nearly 40 years, with a few variations along the way. The pair you see here today are pretty special.
The first knife is an original 1980 Rawhide #8445 Minute Man from it's first year of production! It features a stainless steel, 2 1/8" clip point blade, light brown staminawood scales, brass pins and slant bolsters and a lockback mechanism. It sports the "Q80 USA" stamp. This knife could probably use a light polishing on the bolsters, but I don't see any dents or deep scratches. The scales are free of any chips or cracks. The pivot pin sits a little proud, possibly suggesting that the blade has been replaced. The blade itself does not appear to ever have been used, carried or sharpened. There are some surface scratches and rub marks. It locks open solid with no wobble or play. The action is a little rough when you start to close it, but has a nice snap on close.
The second knife is a very rare, Ducks Unlimited SFO (Special Factory Order) made from a variation of the #8445, which is called the #1175 Patriot. The Patriot features a stainless steel, 2 1/4" spear point blade, which sports a "Ducks Unlimited One of 150" blade etch, brown jigged bone scales, brass pins and liners, nickel silver slant boslters and a lockback mechanism. This knife shows some light signs of use and pocket wear, mainly on the boslters, but there are a couple very shallow scratches on the pile side scale. They are not too easy to spot with the naked eye. But overall, the scales are free from any chips or cracks. Smooth action on open and close, with good snap. The blade locks open solid with the slightest amount of wobble when you apply a bit of pressure (it does not move freely) but no blade play. The blade itself shows light to moderate signs of use, mostly with scuffs and scratches and a bit of wear on the edge. But the etch is still completely intact and, more importantly, the deep engraving is still in fantastic condition. The #1175 was only produced from 1987-1988. So then why does it have a "Q83 USA" tang stamp? An excellent question, with a pretty unique answer...
In 1982, following the success of the Rawhide Series, Queen introduced a higher quality line of some of the models that were offered in the Rawhide Series. These knives were called the Hawk Series. Some changes were made to the #8445 including a spear point blade and darker wood scales. These changes resulted in the new model #1200 "Sparrow Hawk" lockback. So it would seem that this blade was origianlly manufactured for the #1200 model in 1983, but was not used for production until years later when an SFO came in for 150 of the Sparrow Hawks. These customs were complete with a beautiful engraving on the pile side of the blade, reading "Larry Moore Memorial"
Perfect stocking stuffers for someone who appreciates knife history!
Queen has always been held in high regard with collectors, noted for their high quality and tradition. Following the closure of their doors in 2018, there has been a renewed interest in collecting all lines of Queen Cutlery; including Robeson, and Schatt and Morgan. Grab your piece of American knife history before they're all gone!
