Based out of St. Louis, MO, Simmons Hardware was an industry leader in tool manufacturing around the turn of the last century. The "Keen Kutter" line was first introduced in 1900, primarily on axes and hatchets. The KK trademark was only added to their highest quality tools. Later, a line of pocket knives also sported the trademark. The name EC Simmons also appeared on the KK logo until Simmons Hardware was bought out by Shapleigh Hardware in 1940.

The putty knife looks fantastic, measuring in at approx 7 1/4" with a 3 1/2" blade. It is solid, with no wobble or play. It has the minor dings and scratches you would expect from a tool this old, but the beautiful Walnut wood scales are free from any chips or cracks, and they are held on by 2 large brass rivets and nice pinched bolsters.  The blade has a durable full tang construction, with the blade etch as clear as day. There is some very light pitting and patina throughout.

The unique miter square appears to be construced from 2 pieces. The main component is a 45 degree square with a 10" ruler section stamped into it's longest edge. the other edge features the "EC Simmons - Keen Kutter" logo. A third section, which features a lip on both sides, is married with the first to form one solid piece. The reverse side is free from any markings.

Both are built to last at least another century of use, but valuable enough to just be admired. Add it to your collection or cross someone off your Christmas list today.
