This is Most Probably an Early MAHER & GROSH TOLEDO, OHIO 1-Blade Barehead Jack Folding Pocket Knife That’s Been Professionally Cleaned, Has a Carbon Steel Spear Point Main Blade with a Long Nail Pull, a Nice Set Set of Black Ebony Wood Scales with a Possible Pin Crack on the Rear Scale From the Open End End Pin Over to the Left About 9/16” and Has a Small Putty Patch Next to the Pin But No Other Cracks, Splits, Missing Chips or Slivers, a Brightly Polished Nickel Silver Gimp Style Shield Inlaid Flush in the Front Scale, 4 Nickel Silver Handle Pins in Each Scale, Brightly Polished Nickel Silver Rounded Bolsters, Brightly Polished Nickel Silver Liners, a Single Brightly Polished Steel Back Spring with No Cracks or Breaks, 3 3/4” in Length, Made by Maher & GROSH that was Located in Toledo, Ohio and Made Between c.1877-1963.

This is a really nice vintage and early Maher & GROSH Barehead Jack. Now you have to have a little faith in determining who the maker was as the stamping is mostly worn away. But in the right light you can make out the TO and a bit of the L on the bottom of the tang which pretty much indicates Toledo, Ohio. There were two other known knife makers located in Toledo for a period. W.H. & W. M. Boos from c.1895-1936 and Bostwick Braun from c.1868 and forward towards present day. But my experience tells me this is most likely a late 1800’s or early 20th century Maher & Grosh. That’s the best and most honest opinion I can give you concerning the maker. The knife has a single carbon steel spear point blade with a long nail pull. I’m fairly certain the blade has been professionally cleaned. I can see no indications of use but a knife maker who is more knowledgeable than I says it had been used and sharpened but has been professionally cleaned. But they did an excellent job of it and now definitely mirror polished. Unfortunately most of the stamping on the tang has worn away with the exception of the very light TOL visible on the bottom left of front tang. The blade has hard and loud alligator snap on open, close and the half-stop. The scales on this knife are black Ebony Wood. On the rear scale there appears to be a crack from the open end end pin over to the left about 9/16”. It looks like someone back when put an identical color spot of most likely putty or epoxy next to the pin itself. Most of the visible cracks looks just as easily to be part of the wood’s open grain. Just look closely at the photos and you can make your own determination. Other than this there are no other cracks, splits or missing chips. There is a brightly polished nickel silver gimp style shield inlaid flush in the front scale. There are four nickel silver handle pins in each scale as well. The knife has very nice brightly polished nickel silver rounded and elongated bolsters with no dents or dings. The liners are also brightly polished nickel silver. The knife has a single very heavy duty steel back spring that helps to give the blade that alligator snap. It’s free of any cracks or breaks and continues to perform the functions it was designed to perform. This beautiful old solid 1-blade jack folding pocket knife is 3 3/4” in length and would look great in a collection or carried as an EDC though I could never consider to use this nice a knife as an every day.
