Hawbakers Special

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Hawbakers Special

Post by gsmith7158 »

I'm Almost afraid to ask this question to the chagrin of the experts here but I have exhausted all of my research tools and cannot find the answer. I am wondering about the relationship between W.R. Case and Stanley Hawbaker. I see that Hawbaker retired from his trapping business in 1977 and his sons carried on. My question is whether the later editions of the Hawbaker Special muskrat were SFO'S for that company or just a special issue from Case.

If you have access to American Premium Guide to Knives And Razors 7th edition, by Jim Sargent, there is an article about Hawbaker and Case. If you don't have this book and are interested in Case, you need this book. Here you are: https://books.google.com/books?id=LL_7w ... on&f=false. As to the later versions, somebody that knows more will probably be along shortly.

By the way, don't be afraid to ask any question here. You can't ask any dumber ones than I have! :lol:

I've searched online for Sargent's book but can only find one place that has the seventh edition. Asking price is $137.00 which seems quite high to me. Is that the going rate? The sixth edition is available for $30.00.

I have electronic PDF version of Sargent's 7th edition. Don't remember where I got it, but came on a DVD. It is very convenient to be able to use the Adobe Acrobat reader and search feature. The DVD appears to be available on Amazon.com

I would think that is way over priced. Check Knife World/Knife Magazine book sales.They may have the newer edition.

It looks like if you own one of these seventh edition books with the DVD you can make more money on the book than alot of the knives listed in it. All the first line sellers are out of stock at the list price of $27.95. Some resllers have a new ine listed as high as $175.00.

Look again. 7th edition came with DVD included. The listing I'm seeing in the link provided says new, factory sealed copies, which if so should be the book and DVD. Quote from the website listing:

"Item Description: Krause Publications 2009-02-02, 2009. DVD-ROM. Book Condition: New. Seventh Edition. 144020375X Brand new! Factory sealed. Bookseller Inventory # Z144020375XZN"

If in doubt there is a capability on the website to send a question to the seller. This site is abebooks.com. American Book Exchange web site. It is where independent book sellers list their books for sale.

We kind of veered away from the original intent of this post but I see in Sargent's book that the relationship between Case And Hawbaker's Supply remains intact with Stanley's son at the helm of the company. Interesting though that there are some big gaps in the orders.

Ken[/quote Ken got my order today but it was the DVD only, no book. Should have known for $8.99. But since we are on this this thread thought I would show off my first Hawbaker Special.

Sorry. :oops: ::facepalm:: The listing clearly said "Book condition new" so if you're so inclined contact the seller, tell them you were expecting a book, and request a refund. Also, as I recall there were several other sellers with listings for not a lot more money. If in doubt contact the seller and ask if it's the book or only the DVD, before you buy. You can send the seller a question directly from the abebooks.com website. At the bottom of each listing click where it says "Ask Bookseller a question". I've done that before and received a response within a day.

BTW, nice knife! ::tu::

It's no biggy. I got a 6th edition book so I can just use that DVD as an update although I will have to break out my old laptop. Most of these new ones don't have them. I guess they are tring to push everone towards downloads.
