Took an afternoon "fall color" drive through the hills of SE Illinois this afternoon. It was so overcast, that tree pictures aren't worth posting. We did stop by Cave In Rock State Park, near the small town by the same name, and on the Ohio River.
Anyone who has seen "How The West Was Won" (the movie, not the TV series) would have seen Cave In Rock. It is where the segment was filmed in which Jimmy Stewart and the family which he was escorting down the Ohio by flatboat, encounter river pirates, headed by Walter Brennan.
Then took the ferry over to Kentucky and shopped a couple of Amish stores before the return home.

Yesterday me and a buddy made a trip up to Cabela's in Hamburg, PA. While they had a decent selection of Case knives, nothing struck me as something I couldn't live without. Always fun to meander about the store, though.

Here are a couple of pics for those living in the non deciduous world. They weren't taken by me, but were taken fairly close to where I live, and are pretty typical of the Shawnee N F. One of my nephews was out hiking yesterday and sent them to me.

Rock formations, hills, trees, waterfalls, a couple of swamps, wildlife.......if you can't find something you like there then you just don't like the outdoors!

I like, that it is where North meets South for many species of flora. It is the Southernmost point for some tree and plant species and also the Northernmost for others. The Cache River wetlands contain one of the Northernmost examples of a true Southern Swamp (I think the Northernmost is in Delaware) and also Illinois' oldest tree, a Cypress 1,000+ years old. Just a baby by Bristlecone pine standards, but pretty old for a state East of the Mississippi whose nickname is "The Prairie State".

I'll take a nice piece of Hardin County fluorite. My father in law was the point man for many of the nine day horse rides through the Shawnee National Forest.

Took down the the last humming bird feeder today, last one I saw was around the tenth of the month. Hopefully they are no more coming through.

Found this photo of cutting hay before rain was forecast. The property is up in what we call Mallee country, a fairly dry and harsh climate with huge properties where you have to be of a certain character to survive, you can see by the photo the huge tract of land that they are harvesting. Hope you all have a good weekend.

That doesn't look like alfalfa, do you know what type of "hay" that is? Is it some type of grain? In my part of the world, hay means alfalfa and that takes a good amount of water. I know that in other places, hay can mean oat, wheat, barley, rye, etc.
